Old Georgian

Etymology

Two main reconstructions exist:

  • Proto-Kartvelian *kat- (hen), making Old Georgian ქათამი (katami) a cognate to Svan ქათალ (katal), Mingrelian ქოთომი (kotomi) and Laz ქოთუმე (kotume). Starostin considers the lexeme to be borrowed from Proto-Nakh *kōtam, from Proto-Northeast Caucasian *gwāṭa.
  • Alternatively, from Proto-Georgian-Zan *katam- (hen), with the cognates Mingrelian ქოთომი (kotomi) and Laz ქოთუმე (kotume). Klimov considers Svan ქათალ (katal) to be borrowed from a Georgian source, because the affixal ქათ-ალ (kat-al) did not exist in the Common Kartvelian stage. Due to the similarity of some other Caucasian designations of the hen, Klimov points out the cultural character of the word.
