Etymology 2

Compound of 望 ‎(mochi) +‎ 月 ‎(tsuki, “moon”).^[2][1] The mochi element is of uncertain derivation. It probably derives from the 連用形 ‎(ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 持つ ‎(motsu, “to have, to possess; to keep, to maintain”), but the semantic relationship remains unclear. The tsuki changes to zuki as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
