Pictogram (象形) – a wheat plant. Originally 來 was a pictogram for "wheat" and 麥, adding a foot beneath, was invented for the nearly homophonous word "come". With time, the simpler character became fixed as the writing of the more common word "come", leaving 麥 for "wheat".
