From Proto-Albanian *dersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ĝhersos, compare Ancient Greek χέρσος (khérsos, dry land)[2]. Alternatively from earlier *ndjerr, Proto-Albanian *ən-tersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ters- 'to dry (up)'. Compare Latin torreo (to dry), Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍃𐌿𐍃 (þaursus), Old High German durri arid, dry.
