Etymology 1

Uncertain. The original sense, retained in dialects, is "a rag, swaddling clothes" and it is possible that the word is an old cognate of the international parka meaning "jacket", as a loan from Tundra Nenets or, less likely, even by common inheritance from Proto-Uralic.^[1]
