Probably from *šāma-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źemē (ground), or alternatively from a word meaning "human". In both cases, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm. Cognates include Estonian Soome, Northern Sami Suopma, as well as Sami, Häme (Tavastia), hämäläinen (Tavastian).
