From Proto-Germanic *widuz, from Proto-Indo-European *widʰu- ‎(“tree, beam”). Cognate with Old Saxon widu, Old High German witu, Old Norse viðr (Danish and Swedish ved). The Indo-European root is also the source of Old Irish fid (Welsh gwydd, Breton gwez).
