Etymology

According to Orel "A difficult word without any reliable explanation". Others have suggested Proto-Albanian *ghemen, from Proto-Indo-European *ĝem(e)- ‎(“to marry”), cognate to Ancient Greek γαμέω ‎(gaméō, “marry”), Avestan [script needed] ‎(zāmaoya, “brother of son-in-law”), Sanskrit जामा ‎(jāmā, “daughter-in-law”) but with insurmountable semantic problems.
