From Proto-Slavic *ryti, from Proto-Slavic *rūti. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *rū-, *rou-. Related to the vowel ordering of Ukrainian рвати (rváty, to tear), from Old East Slavic ръвати (rŭvati, to tear), from Proto-Slavic *rŭvati, from Proto-Indo-European *reu-, *rū-, *rŭ-.
