Etymology
From earlier *Վարհագն (*Varhagn), from Parthian *Varhraγn; ultimately from Avestan 𐬬𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬚𐬭𐬀𐬖𐬥𐬀 (Vərəθraγna, “Verethragna”, literally “smiting of resistance, breaking of defence; victory”). Related to Avestan 𐬬𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬚𐬭𐬀 (vərəθra, “shield, obstacle, defensive power”) and Sanskrit वृत्र (vṛtrá, “Vṛtra; defense; coverer”), all ultimately stemming from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hurtra- (“cover”).
Cognate with Middle Persian 𐭥𐭫𐭧𐭫𐭠𐭭 (Wahrām, “war god, god of victory”), Persian بهرام (Bahrām), Bactrian ορλαγνο (orlagno, “god of victory”), Sogdian [script needed] (vašagn) and Sanskrit वृत्रहन् (vṛtrá-hán, “smiter of vṛtra, i.e. smiting the cause of covering/hiding”).
