From Old Armenian ափիոն (apʿion) (in Galen), from Middle Persian [script needed] (apiyōn), from Ancient Greek ὄπιον (ópion). The forms աֆիոն (afion), աֆիոն (afion) are from Arabic أفيون (ʾafyūn) or Persian افیون (afyun).
