A derivative of Proto-Indo-European *bʰrHǵ- (birch). Cognates include Sanskrit भूर्ज (bhūrja, a species of birch), Ossetian бӕрз (bærz), Proto-Germanic *birkijǭ, Common Slavic *berza (birch).

Proto-Kartvelian *bard- (undergrowth, brush, bushes) may be borrowed from Armenian.
