1. An elderly man; an aged or old man.
2. A grandfather: the father of a parent.
3. An old wise man.

Usage notes

• Though historically the primary sense was “old man” or “old wise man” (in which sense it was used also as an adjective), in modern use the primary sense is “grandfather”.
• This noun is a bit formal today; the more colloquial term for a grandfather is סבא ‎(sába).
