- Hamza (ء) is a letter in the Arabic alphabet that represents the glottal stop /ʔ/, but it is not one of the 28 full letters and does not have a place in the alphabet. The glottal stop may be written with آ (/ʔā/), أ (/ʔa/, /aʔ/), إ (/ʔi/), ؤ (/ʔu/, /uʔ/), ئ (/ʔi/, /iʔ/), or, usually after a long vowel, ء. For example: كِسَاء (/kisāʔ/).
