فوق
فوق
Arabic
Adverb
فَوْقُ • (fawqu)
Usage notes
This originates as a case form of a defective noun فَوْق (fawq, “location that is above”). It is declined normally when definite or in the construct state, e.g. الفَوْقُ (al-fawqu, “the location that is above”), فَوْقُهُ (fawquhu, “his upper part”). Other forms are the adverbial accusative in the preposition فَوْقَ (fawqa, “above”), the genitive in the expression مِن فَوْقٍ (min fawqin, “from above, above”) (also with an attached pronoun, as in مِن فَوْقِهِم (min fawqihim, “(from) above them”)), and the irregular expression مِن فَوْقُ (min fawqu, “(from) above”).
