Etymology

From Pali māra ‎(“evil one; tempter; death personified”). Compare Sanskrit मार ‎(māra, “evil one; death; etc.”); Old Khmer māra, māra°, °māra ‎(“Buddhist Satan; death”); Modern Khmer មារ ‎(méar).

     Ye ca kāyena vācāya manasā ca susaṃvutā na te māravasānugā na te mārassa paccagūti. He who conducts himself well, whether in relation to his body, to his speech, or to his mind, will not be subject to the authority of the māra, and will never walk behind the māra.
