Etymology
酸 (san, “acid”) + 素 (so, “element”), calque of Dutch zuurstof (“oxygen; sourstuff”). Compare German Sauerstoff, Luxembourgish Sauerstoff.
Considered to be used first in Udagawa Yōan's (宇田川榕菴, 1798 – 1846) book Introduction to Chemistry (舎密開宗, Seimi Kaisō), a compilation of various scientific books in Dutch.
