무리

무리

Korean

Noun

무리 (muri)

  1. group, crowd, gang, horde

Etymology 2

First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as 모로 (Yale: mwolwo). Seo (2000) (徐廷範, 國語語源辭典) considered this cognate with 모레 (more, “the day after tomorrow”) (as in 내일모레 (來日, naeilmore, “the day after tomorrow”) and the (ma) in 마파람 (maparam, “south wind”). He postulated that all of the above were forms in which the ancient word for "sun" (*mol) was preserved.

Alternatively, Starostin postulates Proto-Altaic *múra (round; turn, return) and lists muri as a descendant, making it cognate with Japanese  (まる) (maru, ball; circular thing) and  (まる) (marui, round, circular). This is cited as an example in Robbeets (2005) "Is Japanese Related to Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic?".
