무리
무리
Korean
Noun
무리 • (muri)
Etymology 2
First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as 모로 (Yale: mwolwo). Seo (2000) (徐廷範, 國語語源辭典) considered this cognate with 모레 (more, “the day after tomorrow”) (as in 내일모레 (來日—, naeilmore, “the day after tomorrow”) and the 마 (ma) in 마파람 (maparam, “south wind”). He postulated that all of the above were forms in which the ancient word for "sun" (*mol) was preserved.
Alternatively, Starostin postulates Proto-Altaic *múra (“round; turn, return”) and lists muri as a descendant, making it cognate with Japanese 丸 (maru, “ball; circular thing”) and 丸い (marui, “round, circular”). This is cited as an example in Robbeets (2005) "Is Japanese Related to Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic?".
