From Middle High Germanhiute, from Old High Germanhiutu, hiuto(“today”), a contraction of hiu tagu(literally “(on) this day”), from Proto-Germanic*hiu dagu(“on this day”); similar to other constructions in Old High German (e.g. hiuro < *hiu jāru(“(in) this year”)), see Heuer; and cognate with Old Dutch hiudo (> Dutch heden(“today”)), Old Saxon hiudu, hūdigu, hōdigo (> Middle Low German hüde, hüdene(“today”)), Old Frisian hiōda, hiūdega (> West Frisian hjoed(“today”)), Old English hēodæġ(“today”).
