Etymology

From Middle High German hiute, from Old High German hiutu, hiuto ‎(“today”), a contraction of hiu tagu ‎(literally “(on) this day”), from Proto-Germanic *hiu dagu ‎(“on this day”); similar to other constructions in Old High German (e.g. hiuro < *hiu jāru ‎(“(in) this year”)), see Heuer; and cognate with Old Dutch hiudo (> Dutch heden ‎(“today”)), Old Saxon hiudu, hūdigu, hōdigo (> Middle Low German hüde, hüdene ‎(“today”)), Old Frisian hiōda, hiūdega (> West Frisian hjoed ‎(“today”)), Old English hēodæġ ‎(“today”).
