From ūnus (“one”). The 'onion' sense may however continue a Proto-Indo-European *wósHr̥- (“garlic, onion”) seen also in Hittite 𒉿𒀸𒄩𒅈 (wašḫar, “garlic”), Sanskrit उष्ण (uṣṇa, “onion”), Pashto ووږه (ūža, “garlic”), Khowar [script needed] (wǝẓnū, “garlic”)[1].
