From Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos), from Mycenaean Greek *aikupitos (*-a-i-k-u-p-i-t-o-s) (nb. 𐁁𐀓𐀠𐀴𐀍 (ai-ku-pi-ti-jo) 'Egyptian'), from Late Egyptian [script needed] (Hikuptah) 'Memphis', from Middle Egyptian ḥwt k3 ptḥ (literally, 'The temple of the ka of Ptah', referring to Ptah's temple in the important city of Memphis).
