From Proto-Indo-European *ālu (“esculent root”), uncertainly reconstructed. Related only to Sanskrit आलु (ālu, “esculent root”)[1], whence Hindi आलु (ālu, “potato, yam”), and the culinary borrowing, English aloo (“potato”).
