Via other European languages, ultimately a borrowing from Latin apostrophus, itself a borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀπόστροφος (apóstrophos, “accent of elision”), a nominal use of an adjective derived from the verb ἀποστρέφω (apostréphō, “I turn away”).
