From Proto-Slavic *borъ. Because in Slovak and Polish dialects it means "marsh", it is sometimes being connected with Proto-Slavic *bara, meanig the same. More probably it is connected with Proto-Indo-European *bʰor-u-. Compare also borůvka.[1]
