From Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌽 (ganan), from Proto-Germanic *ginōną (Old Norse gana), from a nasalised form of Proto-Indo-European *gʰē- (Latin hiō, Ancient Greek χαίνω (khaínō)). Influenced by another Germanic origin term, Frankish *waidanjan (“get food”) (compare Portuguese ganhar, Catalan guanyar, French gagner, Italian guadagnare.
