Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *skrīþaną, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kreyt-, *(s)ker- ‎(“twist, turn, bend”). Germanic cognates include Old Saxon skrīthan, Middle Dutch schriden (Dutch schrijden), Old High German skrītan (German schreiten), Old Norse skríða (Swedish skrida). The Indo-European root also gave Latin crīsāre and Middle Irish crith (Breton skrija ‎(“tremble with fear”)).
