Etymology

From uz- ‎(“on, over”) +‎ balss ‎(“voice”) +‎ -enis, i.e., that which is above the balsene ‎(“larynx”), clearly a calque of New Latin epiglottis, from Ancient Greek ἐπί ‎(epí, “upon, over”) and γλῶττα, γλῶσσα ‎(glôtta, glôssa, “tongue”) (with a masculine ending).
