Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *muːɡs) : semantic 巾 (“cloth”) + phonetic 冒 (OC *muːɡs, *mɯːɡ) – a cloth hat.
Etymology
“Head scarf, head cover” of the Southern indigenous people (Shuowen); “scepter cover” (Zhouli); “hat” (Hanshu).
Wanderwort of Southeastern and Eastern Asia. The explanation in Shuowen alludes to a Southern origin, hence compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *muuk ~ muək (“hat”) (Khmer មួក (muŏk), Mon ဒမှော် (həmok, “wide hat”)), Thai หมวก (mùuak, “hat, cap”) and Lao ຫມວກ (mūak). On the other hand, this word is closely related to 冒 (mào, “to cover; hat”), Tibetan རྨོག (rmog, “helmet”) and Burmese အမောက် (a.mauk, “crest (of hair); comb”), for which Starostin posits Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mōk (“hat”), a derivative of *mō(s) (“to cover”).
Cognate with 鍪 (móu, “metal cap; helmet”).
