The wood of the tree մայր ‎(mayr) was used as a building material. The basic meaning is ‘timber, wood’, derived from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ter-ieh₁-, a derivative of *méh₂tēr ‎(“mother”), in the sense of “source”. Cognate with Latin materia and Old Armenian մայրի ‎(mayri).
