Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *nuːb) : semantic 糸 (“silk, thin thread”) + phonetic 内. Modern nà, from Middle Chinese nəp, from Old Chinese *nuːb. Original sense: "to patch old cloths", "to make enter → to accept, to receive; to contribute". The latter sense is the causative of 入 (rù, from MC ȵip, from Old Chinese *njub, "to enter"), the glyph which is part of 內, the traditional form of 内 ("to be inside"). Also cognate with 内 (nèi, from MC nuoi, from Old Chinese *nuːbs, "to be in, inside").
