Etymology
Generally thought to derive from a Korean dialectal term for the fish, which would have entered Japanese as 松魚 (matsu no uo, "pine fish", possibly in reference to wooded streams where it can be caught), combining with or being influenced by the verb 増す (masu, "to be excellent, superior", in reference to the size, flavor, and other favorable characteristics of the fish).
Pronunciation
- Kun'yomi
- (Tokyo) ます [màsú] (Heiban - [0])[1]
- (Tokyo) ます [màsúꜜ] (Odaka - [2])[1][2]
- IPA(key): [ma̠sɯᵝ]
Noun
鱒 (hiragana ます, katakana マス, romaji masu)
- trout, sea trout: more specifically, fish belonging to genera of the family Salmonidae: Salmo, Oncorhynchus, Coregonus, or Salvelinus
Usage notes
As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana in biological contexts, as マス.
