Old Norse
Etymology
From Proto-Norse *hānaʀ (*hānaʀ), of uncertain origin. Perhaps a compound of *he- (*he-) (corresponding to English he) and *ānaʀ (*ānaʀ) (from Proto-Germanic *jainaz, corresponding to Gothic 𐌾𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (jains)) or even directly from *ānaʀ (*ānaʀ) with h- added due to influence from the demonstrative pronoun hinn, or else perhaps directly inherited from Proto-Indo-European and answering to Ancient Greek κεῖνος (keînos).
