Etymology
From Proto-Baltic *wes-ar-ā, from *wes-er-ā, from Proto-Indo-European *wésr̥ (“summer”), genitive *wesnes, from the stem *wes- (“to shine”). The original meaning was “bright (season)” (i.e., after the dark days of winter), covering also spring, which in ancient times was considered to be one season together with summer. Cognates include Lithuanian vãsara, Old Church Slavonic вєсна (vesna), Russian, Ukrainian весна (vesná), Belarusian вясна (vjasná), Czech vesna, Polish wiosna, Old Norse vār, Sanskrit वसन्तः (vasantáḥ, “spring”) (< *wes-en-to), Ancient Greek ἔαρ (éar) (< *wēsr̥-), Latin vēr (< *wēsr̥-).[1]
